”Bruceremo le chiese e gli altari / bruceremo i palazzi e le regge / con le budella dell’ultimo prete / impiccheremo il papa e il re”
which translated, reads like this ”We will burn churches and altars / we will burn palaces and palaces / with the guts of the last priest / we will hang the pope and the king”.
These are the lyrics of an anonymous song of the twentieth century.
For someone like me who has never liked priests and churches, it is very strange to welcome to the Almost Halloween Time Records family a Reverend.
The Reverend Terry Rice, of course, is not a real priest, unless he lied to me, Rev is a musician from southern Kentucky. His influences range from Hank Williams Sr, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Lou Reed & David Bowie to Black Sabbath, Dr Hook, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie & The Ramones. His lyrics are genuine and true to his own life. Depression, poverty, alcohol, self mutilation, suicide attempts and lost love are reocurring themes. Rev lays out every aspect of his life in song leaving nothing untold.
Rev has been a long time member, as well as co-founder, of the creep rock band Dark Humor. He started a solo project under the name The Reverend Terry Rice & The Honky Punks as an outlet for songs that didn’t fit in with the creep rock sound.
Stripped to the bone and raw, Rev’s solo work is as real as it comes. Never once claiming to be a good musician or singer, Rev sings from the heart. Self described as bleeding on his guitar, sometimes literally, Rev refuses to be untrue to himself. Sometimes ugly, always real, The Reverend Terry Rice makes no excuses nor offers any apologies for who or what he is.
