Week 3
Wim’s request.
I would like to talk you about ”Unknown Pleasure” today, but I will not.
It is always out of curiosity that I purchased ”20 Years And No Girlfriend” by Nicole Kidman.
”20 Years And No Girlfriend” by Nicole Kidman is actually on Bridgetown Records but I found it in the mailorder section of the Folktale website when I was exploring the catalog of the label..
Obviously Nicole Kidman is not the famous Australian actress, is not even a girl, Nicole Kidman is Jon Barba from Los Angeles and his music is some sort of dream pop characterized by the massive use of a Yamaha keyboard.
All the songs included in this collection seem to have a bond, comnncetion or reference with the actress. And so we got ”Dogville”, ”Eyes Wide Shut”, ”Birthday Girl”, ”Australia”, ”The Stepford Wives”, ”Practical Magic”, ”My Life”, ”Batman Forever”, ”To Die For”
How many of these movies have you seen? Jon Barba must have seen them all.
I have seen only a few, I have to confess and some good ones. ”Dogville”, the Kubrick one and ”Birthday Girl” where she plays the role of a Russian mail-order bride, brilliantly.
Jon’s obsession with Nicole Kidman is certainly greater than mine. The songs are morbid, unhealthy and sick, all in a good way, and I can imagine Jon watching the movies, there are even some audio samples and you can hear Jon comment and describe some scenes.
The keyboard sounds precarious and at times you would swear that if Jon had increased the volume by one tone, the keyboard would have exploded and gone to pieces.
I think I have played ”My Everything” hundred times, pressing the repeat button and the theme outlined on the keyboard still resonates in my head occasionally.
On more recent records Miley Cirus appears, but Nicole Kidman is another thing.
I’d reissue this on vinyl, now, if I had the permission.
