Tom Violence like football, so I asked one of them, Darren Fox, to draw up his list of favorite films that have football as their main theme or films in which football plays an important role.
A very interesting list. I thought Tom Violence supported Sheffield United but now I’m starting to have some doubts…
Darren: “I am not much of a film buff, but without thinking about it too hard, my top 5 football related films would be:
- Kes (1969) – obviously not really a football film at all, but that scene with Brian Glover as the bully PE teacher knocking over the kids to score is ingrained in my mind. If you haven’t read the book it is based on (A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines), I would highly recommend that too.
- Do You Want To Win (2017) – the story of the last true champions of England. You’ll never guess who won.
- Gregory’s Girl (1980) – I watched this at the cinema on release and immediately fell in love with Clare Grogan – a love that has never truly ended.
- The Damned United (2009) – an adaptation of the wonderful book by David Peace interpreting Brian Clough’s 44 days in charge of the best team in Europe at the time, Leeds United.
- Take Us Home (Leeds United) (2019/2020) – a behind-the-scenes documetary in 2 parts following Leeds United under the leadership of Marcelo Bielsa as they attempt to get promoted back to the Premier League after being out of it for 16 years. Narrated by Leeds fan, Russel Crowe.”
