When I tried to imagine the face of Coach Randall, he immediately came to mind, the meanest coach of all time: Daigo Inokuma.
A character created by Chikako Urano that originally appeared in “Attack no. 1”, a Japanese manga of which an anime adaptation was made.
Mimì and the national volleyball team, produced in 104 episodes between 1969 and 1971 directed by Eiji Okabe and Fumio Kurokawa.
Daigo’s character is inspired by Hirofumi Daimatsu, the fierce coach of the Japan women’s national volleyball team.
Hirofumi Daimatsu, the Demon, forced his students to train for eight consecutive hours, from 4 pm to midnight.
Despite the suffering, the girls that were his students declared in various interviews that they all resisted, in view of a higher goal: the Olympics of 1964.
I don’t know if Hirofumi also tied girls’ wrists during practice, Daigo sure did.
Mimì undergoes very hard training on her own initiative. The image of her training to receive bagher with chains around her wrists has become legendary.
The cover in the photo is a tribute to Daigo, the chains and its creators.
